Behavior Management in Bay Village, Ohio
At Bay Pediatric Dentistry, we are committed to helping increase access to care for children and families in need of safe and effective implementation of advanced behavior guidance and management techniques.
Many children who suffer from early childhood caries are pre-cooperative, fearful and unable to sit through a restoration appointment. Please allow us to help you.
We specialize in treating children who present challenges related to their age and behavior. Our goal for every child is to establish communication and alleviate the child’s dental fear and anxiety, promoting a positive attitude towards oral healthcare.
The first appointment would be a consultation to evaluate the child’s cooperative potential which is essential for treatment planning which may include one or more of the following:
SADE (Sensory Adapted Dental Environment)*
This intervention includes adaptations of clinical settings – dimmed light, relaxing music, weighted blanket etc to produce a calming effect and relaxing environment. It is used for children with dental anxiety, ASD , Sensory processing difficulties and other disabilities.
Desensitization visits*
It is a psychological technique to help modify behaviors of anxious patients in a dental setting. It exposes patients gradually to small steps of the dental procedure to the patients’ comfort level. Multiple appointments are needed to see results
Tell-Show -Do /Ask-tell-Ask*
These techniques involve explaining procedures using verbiage the child will understand in a careful, non threatening setting
N2O
When inhaled, it is absorbed by the body and has a calming effect. Normal breathing eliminates nitrous oxide from the body. Your child will smell this “flavored air” and experience a sense of well being and relaxation. If the sights, sounds or sensations of dental treatment worry your child, he or she may respond more positively with the use of nitrous oxide/oxygen.
It is Very Safe! Nitrous oxide/oxygen is very gentle and short-lived. It is non-addictive. It is mild, easily taken, then quickly eliminated by the body. Your child remains fully conscious – keeps all natural reflexes – when breathing nitrous oxide/oxygen.
The day of the procedure, give light food about 2 hrs prior (nausea or vomiting can occur when a child has a full stomach). If your child has a respiratory problem (like cold, sinus infection) and is unable to breathe through their nose, they will not be able to inhale N2O effectively, please call and reschedule.
Sedation
Children with severe anxiety and/or the inability to relax are candidates for IV Sedation. Usually , these children are young and/ or have compromised health issues and helping them control their anxiety is not possible using other methods. We offer in-house IV sedation dentistry with an anesthesiologist to ensure the comfort of our patients. We have been working with Ambulatory Anesthesia Group for over 25 years.
